On a grey, damp late-November Sunday morning (which may explain the result!) Richard beat Robin in the Club Singles championship final; Bernie and Jean, respectively, were the losing semi-finalists, with the scores in all three matches being 2-0 in games.
Jill and Robin retained the Club Doubles championship on Sunday 4th November, beating Hilary and Gianni by the narrowest possible margin, 13-12 in the third game. In the semis, both pairs won hard-fought matches in two games each, with Jill and Robin beating Ron and Peter (new member this season), and Hilary and Gianni defeating Marilyn and Dave.
At the Regional Doubles on 21st October, Graham became the first club junior to achieve the "white" award; congratulations to Graham, and thanks to Kath for holding his examination during the day. Hilary and Gianni beat Jill and Robin in the final of the consollage competition.
The club was runner-up to Farmhouse in the Region's 9-a-side Salver competition on Sunday 30th September.
Hilary and Gianni were runners-up in the Regional Mixed Doubles on Sunday 23rd September.
"Jorji", Jill and Robin with John Pollinger (Shedfield) won the Shedfield Classic on 26th August.
Bernie, Ron and Richard won the Flight Refuelling Open at Cobham Sports and Social Club (near Wimborne) on 8th July.
"Chianti" (Hilary and Gianni, together with Jackie from Limesdowne) were third in the Regional Triples, held at Crondall PC on 1st July, behind teams from Foxdale PC and the Racing Club, Basingstoke.
Our own Open Triples competition, which attracted 14 entries on a hot and sunny 24th June, was won by "Jorji", our very own Jill and Robin, together with John Pollinger (Shedfield).
The entrants...........played...........for the prizes;...Hilary congratulates winners "Jorji"
Southampton, represented by two SCPC teams, were runners-up to the Isle of Wight in the pétanque section of the Hampshire & Isle of Wight games held at Dibden Golf Club on 17th June. Triple 1 (Hilary, Jill & Robin) were narrowly beaten by the IOW team in league 1, while triple 2 (Bernie, Gianni and Richard) even more narrowly won league 2. Nice day, though, and thanks to ex-member Brian Smith and Pippa for great organisation.
"Chianti", consisting of Bernie and Gianni with Jackie Lee (Limesdowne) in the first stage and Richard in the second, qualified 6th of 12 to play in the Regional Masters at Shedfield on 21st/22nd July, from which the team to represent the Southern Region in the inter-regional competition in September will be decided. The second stage of the Regional Qualifiers was the last "representative" event to be played at The Dove, which, along with its splendid owners, Patrick and Christine Boniface, will be much missed. (Update, 22nd July - the less said about what happened once they/we got to Shedfield, the better! - but they/we all tried hard!)
Jill and Robin, together with John Pollinger (Shedfield) won the Shedfield Triples on May 27th.
Robin won this year's "Bernay Cup" Mêlée on May Bank Holiday Monday, narrowly ahead of Hilary.
Hilary, Bernie, and Gianni did wonderfully well to be semi-finalists in the "Champion-of-champions" competition.
And, of course, this site was published on 24 May 2001. Thanks to HCC's Hantsweb for hosting it.
This year's AGM was held at the clubhouse on 13th November 2001, and was attended by 13 of our 17 members, with apologies from the other 4. A warm welcome was extended to our 4 new members who have joined during the year: Peter and Graham Galton, Paul Garratt and Richard Trent.
The Achievements of the year were highlighted in what has generally been a season of improvement over recent years, due in no small part to the improvements in play amongst our newer members.
A couple of changes were made to the Committee, with Jill retaining her role as Club Captain with overall responsibility for playing matters, but Bernie being elected to take on the captaincy of the 9-a-side team. Peter was elected to replace Gianni as one of the two co-opted Committee members (Jean remains as the other).
The club's Constitution was amended to reflect the change in club officers and our affiliation to Millbrook Rugby Club, and to confirm the timing of our AGM.
These notes don't pretend to be the Minutes of the AGM!
