Season's achievements, 2003

Well, if the season goes on as well as its started, its going to be a good one! Our Floodlighting bid for a grant from SCC's Outer Shirley Regeneration Fund has been successful (8 March) and the lights were used for the first time in the home 9-a-side league match against Ship Wrights. Don't know if they made the difference, as we won 5-4, but the standard of illumination was very much improved and the game more enjoyable as a result.

Graham was a member of one of 6 Southern Region junior teams that played in the National Junior Triples at Luton on 6 April. His was one of 3 of these teams that progressed to the Main competition but none of them went further. The other 3 SR teams reached the semi-finals of the Plate (and one was losing finalist). So Graham, who won the Plate last year, came home this time with nothing except the knowledge that he had progressed further than last year - which must be good! A South-East team won the Main competition, and an IOW team won the Plate.

Jill & Robin, playing with John Pollinger (Shedfield) were runners-up in the Main consollage at the Bordon Open on Good Friday.

Jill won the Bernay Cup rather convincingly on May Bank Holiday Monday! Well played Captain!!

Shedfield weekend (late May bank holiday) was great for Jill, Robin, Hilary and Gianni. In the triples on Sunday, Jill & Robin (with John from Shedfield) won the main competition whilst Hilary & Gianni (with Jed from Limesdowne) beat Bernie & Richard (with Jackie from Limesdowne) in the final of the consollage. In the doubles on Monday, Hilary & Gianni lost in the final of the main competition to a team from Leatherhead, whilst Jill & Robin lost in the final of the consollage to perhaps the day's real stars - a junior team consisting of Jason from Wanderers and Sonja from Worthing, who played superbly! SCPC was very well represented in the doubles, with Jean & Paul, Peter & Graham and Bernie & Richard also out enjoying the sunshine and a good day's play!

Jill & Robin (with John from Shedfield) were at it again in the Farmhouse Open on 1 June, losing in the main final to the Morgans from the Lamb.

Over the two qualification events for the Regional squad to play in the Inter-Regional match in September, Hilary and her team came 9th, Gianni and his team 10th, and Bernie and Richard (with Peter at the second qualifier) came 11th, so all made it to the Regional Masters weekend at Shedfield on June 21/22. Therefore all will participate in either the main Inter Regional squad (top 8 teams at the Masters) or the "Brean Sands Trophy" squad (next 4 teams) on September 6/7.

Eventually, at the Masters, Gianni (with Jed & Mark from Limesdowne) qualified 6th in the squad for the Inter-Regional match; Bernie & Richard (with Jackie from Limesdowne) qualified 8th; and Hilary (with Pam from Farmhouse and Trish from Shedfield) finished 10th with a place in the "Shield" squad.

At our Open competition, Kath Knight presented Graham with his Green and Red Junior awards - Kath said that most adults would struggle to achieve the Red standard! The Main competition was won Tony, Carlo and Pierre from Poole, beating Jorji (Jill and Robin with John Pollinger) in the final. Southdowne (Bernie and Richard with Jackie Lee) beat an all SCPC side of Hilary, Marilyn and David in the Main Consollage final, and Joy, Mike and Glen from Poole Pirates won the Plate.

Jorji (Jill and Robin with John Pollinger of Shedfield) won the plate at the Shedfield Classic on August 24.

For a report on the exploits of Gianni, Bernie and Richard (main competition), Hilary (Inter-Regional Challenge), and Graham (part of the "on-loan" Southern Region junior team representing Cornwall) at the Inter-Regional Championships at Brean Sands on September 6/7, plus some reflections of the Region's performance overall, read SCPC President's Inter-Regional report.

Jill & Robin were losing semi-finalists in the Limesdowne Open (doubles) on September 21.

Congratulations and commiserations to Bernie and Gianni, who were both losing semi-finalists in the Regional Singles at Crondall on September 28. Bernie lost to Dave Stubbs and Gianni to Mark Robertshaw, who went on to win the title. Best club result (as distinct from Gianni's personal back-to-back victories in 1999/2000) in this competition since 1994 when we had both finalists!

The weather was very kind for club finals day on Sunday October 12. In the singles, both semi-finals and the final were closely fought, with Richard P eventually beating Bernie in the final, with them having overcome Richard T and Robin respectively in the semis. The doubles semis were not quite so close, with Marilyn and David unfortunately having to withdraw, and Graham and Richard T not quite living up to their previous performance in losing to Hilary and Gianni; who then went on to lose a closely contested final to Bernie and Richard P. Thanks to Jill for keeping the whole competition on track right through the season!

In the Regional Doubles at Farmhouse on October 19, Bernie and Peter won the Main Consollage, losing only to the eventual finalists during the day. Kath and Dave beat Richard and Graham from the Lamb in the final.

All of our entrants in the Regional Mixed Doubles at Shedfield on October 26 were drawn in the same league in the morning, but all came away with prizes in the afternoon! Bernie (playing with Jackie from Limesdowne) got to the Main semi-finals; Jill and Robin, having lost in the first round of the Main to the eventual winners (Sue and Ian from Horse & Jockey) went on to win the Main consollage; and Hilary and Gianni won the Plate consollage!

Our team (Jill, Robin and Paul D; Hilary, Jean and Gianni; Bernie, Graham and Richard P) were runners up to Crondall in the 9-a-side salver at Bordon on 9 November.
