Championship Finals Report
This year's delayed Finals day took place on a bright, breezy and chilly Sunday, 13th November, watched by a good crowd until it got too cold and dark for these hardy souls to stand around! For the first time ever, I think, the Doubles Final - the last of a day full of long and keenly-contested matches - finished under floodlights at some time around 6pm!
Earlier, in the sunny part of the day, both Singles semi-finals went to 3 games, with Rob adding Jill to his impressive row of scalps in this year's competition - Bill, Hilary and Robin. Andy eventually overcame last year's Champion, Bernie, to set up a Final between the only junior to win the Singles to date (Andy in 1989 and 1990) against Rob who was seeking to break that record. Experience eventually triumphed over youth (and the cold weather, which probably got to Rob near the end of the match) in a high quality final that was a credit to both players. The Doubles semi-finals were equally good and competitive. Hilary and Gianni beat Jill and Robin in two long, close games to 13-12, whilst it took the Champions for the past three years, Bernie and Richard, three well-matched games to overcome the inspired challenge of Peter and Paul. The Final was again a cliff-hanger in 3 games, with Hilary and Gianni just doing enough to deservedly stop the previous Champions' run of victories. Click here for full results.
Apart from the usual good spirit in which all the matches were played, and the splendid contribution of those who braved the cold to come and watch and support the players, perhaps the most pleasing aspect of the day was the quality of the play in all matches. Any of the four "teams" in each competition could easily and worthily have won, as could many of the "teams" that didn't even make it to Finals Day. Which should make it all the more satisfying for those who DID actually take the titles for this year!
