Championship Finals (Last Update 25/03/2007)

This year's Finals were played on the appointed date (Sunday 8th October) which turned out to be a fine autumnal day, ideal for a full day's play - which turned out to be a very good thing, as all of the matches were so tight and competitive that play, which started at 10.00am and was virtually continuous, didn't finish until nearly 6.00pm!

In the Singles semi-finals, there was a titanic battle in three games between Andy P and Robin, with Andy emerging by the narrowest of margins (13-12) in the third game, the first two having been shared (13-6, 12-13). Andy S overcame Rob (to set up and all-Andy final) in two games that were both really tight and well-contested (13-11, 13-10), and could have gone either way. The final also went to three games (13-11, 7-13, 13-3), but Andy S just failed to sign-off from SCPC before he leaves to settle in France by toppling the reigning Champion, Andy P.

The Doubles followed a fairly similar pattern. Jill and Robin had to battle all the way to overcome Rob and Wayne in the third game of their semi-final (10-13, 13-8, 13-7). In the other one, the Champions from 2005, Hilary and Gianni beat the winners for the two previous years, Bernie and Richard in three close games (11-13, 13-5, 13-11), with the third hanging in the balance until the last end. As the evening closed in, however, Hilary and Gianni started to succumb to the rigours of two hard days of pétanque (having spent a long day on the Isle of Wight representing the SCPA in the Champion of Champions competition, and a short night in between!) and Jill and Robin took the Championship in two straight games (13-10, 13-5).
