Championship Finals (Last Update 25/03/2008)
The Championship Finals Day is provisionally set for Sunday 30th September.
Owing to various illnesses, the Doubles semi-finals and final could not be played on 30 September but will provisionally be played on Sunday 7th October, starting at 10 a.m.
The Singles could be played, however, with the early morning drizzle relenting just in time for the scheduled start at 10.30. Andy P overcame David P in two games, 13-6, 13-3, but Graham had to come from a game down to beat Robin 6-13, 13-9, 13-9. The Final was a real cracker and, particularly in the third game, every end was won by good play (rather than lost by bad) and you could count the number of bad boules played by Andy and Graham together on the fingers of one hand; probably the best Singles final the club has ever seen, and it was a real shame that either of them had to lose. In the end, Andy equalled Alan Baker's record of three wins in a row between 1980-2 by winning 8-13, 13-3, 13-11.
The much delayed Doubles final between Graham & Richard T and Jill & Robin finally took place on Sunday 11 November, and started during the only downpour to hit the area for at least a fortnight! Fortunately it brightened up fairly quickly, but the improving weather seemed to favour Graham & Richard T, as they emerged from a 6-13 reverse in the first game to clinch the Championship with two 13-4 victories in the second and third games, playing some fairly irresistible pétanque along the way! Congratulation to both teams for a good match, and to Graham & Richard as Champions, particularly Richard who becomes the latest new name on a club trophy!
