Championship Finals (Last Update 19/03/2009)
Sunday 19 October 2008
The unpromising Autumn weather relented sufficiently to provide a reasonable playing day for our Club Finals. In view of some very late finishes in some previous years when both semi-finals and finals of both Singles and Doubles had produced long matches, the Doubles semi-finals had already been played. You-know-who's law therefore dictated that most of this year's matches were relatively short, with none of them going into a third game, and players and spectators alike were relieved to be heading home quite early in the afternoon.
Progress through the previous rounds ensured that, whatever the outcome of the Singles semi-finals, a new name would grace the "Holt & Haskell" Cup this year. Paul G put an end for this year to Jill's 30-year efforts to win it in a tighter match than the 13-7, 13-10 scoreline might suggest. Peter stood in Graham's way to adding our Singles title to his already impressive list of achievements but, with typical youthful disregard of parental ambitions, Graham won in two similarly competitive games by 13-6, 13-11. He then went on to win the first of probably several Singles crowns, beating Paul 13-4, 13-4.
In the Doubles Final, defending Champions Graham & Richard T faced a challenge from the father-and-daughter duo of Wayne & Sam, who both individually and together have enjoyed hugely successful seasons so early in their petanque "careers". Relative length of experience emerged triumphant as Graham & Richard reclaimed the (somewhat battered) "Goodfirst Challenge Cup" in two very close games by 13-10, 13-12.
