Championship Finals (Last Update 28/02/2010)
This year's Doubles Final and Singles Semi-Finals and Finals were played only one week behind "schedule" on Sunday 18th October, partly due to Saints reaching (and winning!) the finals of the High Level Roofing 6-a-side competition on the originally proposed date.
The finals took place on a very pleasant autumn day. All of the matches in both the singles and doubles went to three games but the mid-afternoon finish of the doubles was before the evening became too chilly. In the Singles semi-finals, Bernie won the first game against Graham but then Graham gradually turned up the pressure and eventually won the next two games and the match. Wayne and David had a more see-saw encounter, with Wayne winning the first game fairly easily and David taking the second also with some ease. The third game ebbed and flowed rather more, but in the end Wayne proved the stronger. The final followed the pattern of Graham's semi-final, with Wayne winning the first game, but then Graham taking the next two to become this year's Champion, retaining his title.
David and Wayne joined forces in the Doubles final, taking on Sam and Hilary. This turned out to be the ultimate dramatic and emotional roller-coaster for players and spectators alike, with David and Wayne winning the first game quite comfortably, but Sam and Hilary storming back to take the second easily. The decisive game looked to be going the same way as the second, but two amazing ends allowed David and Wayne to haul themselves back from the brink of defeat to become Champions by winning 13-12.
The complete results for the two competitions are shown on their respective pages.
