SCPC Open (Last Update 28/02/2010)
Twelve teams turned out for Southampton City's annual tournament, which seems to be par for the course both for our Open and for other similar Regional event over recent years. However, a good spread of strong and experienced players from clubs across the Region - plus old friends from the Island - took part, on a warm day with clouds hiding the sun on-and-off. Morning play was in leagues, each of which ended with one team having won three games, one two, one one and one none. The three league winners plus the next best five teams went into the afternoon knockout, from which first round losers went into the Plate. The four triples who'd missed out on the knock-out played an afternoon league for the Wooden Spoon. The second day of the annual Southampton Kite Festival was also taking place at Lord's Hill Outdoor Recreation Ground, while during the day a helicopter from Hampshire Air Ambulance and another from HM Coastguard landed and took off close by the terrain, all adding further to the atmosphere. A good time was had by all and half the teams entering took home prizes.
The results were as follows (click a thumbnail for a larger picture; names not necessarily in the same order as faces!):
Plate (1st round losers from Main)
Many thanks to Robin for the pictures, and for the report, on which I have exercised a small amount of editorial licence!
